"Tobacco
Prevention:
Reducing the Impact of Chronic Diseases"
Washington,
DC (April 22, 2004) -- Hispanic/Latino policy leaders, public
health professionals, and social activists will convene on
September 23-24, 2004 at the Sheraton Old Town in Albuquerque,
New Mexico to attend the 3 rd National Hispanic/Latino Conference
on Tobacco Prevention and Control.
This
year conference participants will participate in research
findings, resources, exhibits, networking opportunities, and
skills building workshops. As the public health arena places
its attention on the impact of chronic diseases, the 3 rd
National Hispanic/Latino Conference will focus on the impact
that tobacco prevention and control programs have made in
efforts to reduce the effects of chronic diseases in our communities.
Featured speakers will identify the link between tobacco and
chronic diseases and how funding can be sustained to reduce
tobacco use, a much needed area. List of invitees include
Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S.,
and President/CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Risa
Lavizzo-Mourey M.D., M.B.A.
This
conference is sponsored by the National Latino Council on
Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention, and funded by t he Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention's Office of Smoking and
Health, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. LCAT acknowledges
and appreciates the New Mexico Department of Health, New Mexicans
Concerned About Tobacco (NMCAT) and Stop Tobacco On My People
(STOMP) for its continuous s upport of this conference.

hope is that during the conference, participants will reach
out to one another across geographic, ethnic and other boundaries
to initiate dialogues and relationships that will enrich and
support our efforts on tobacco prevention and control. We
also hope that these relationships will build collaborations
that reduce the impact of chronic diseases in our communities,"
says Alejandro Garcia-Barbon, Deputy Director of the National
Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention (LCAT).
