Puerto Rico Smoking Ban

In the attached letter to the Governor of Puerto Rico, LCAT urged him to sign a ban on smoking in public buildings that was passed by legislature, as it would reduce the significant damages that cigarette smoking does to the Latino community's health. Unfortunately, the Governor declined to sign, effectively vetoing the new law. As our conference in Puerto Rico approaches, LCAT remains committed to working with the Anti-Tobacco Coalition in Puerto Rico Coalition and other activists on the island to protect community health and pass the smoking ban next year.

LCAT applauds passing of Smith-Bingaman Bill, which stripped all proposed Medicaid cuts from the $2.6 trillion budget for next year, killing the heart of the plan's deficit reduction and dealing an embarrassing setback to President Bush and Republican leaders.
